5 Simple self-care tips

In this post I go through 5 simple self-care tips that you can put into practice to help improve your wellbeing. These self-care tips are simple but as with most things, they need some effort on our part.

1. Exercise

There may be people that struggle with the concept of exercise, but it doesn’t have to involve you getting up at 5am and running in the rain. Exercise takes many forms and it’s important to find a form of exercise that appeals to you as this will make it more sustainable.

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise in my opinion. You can do it anywhere and it’s probably easier to incorporate into your day-to-day routine.

Exercise has benefits for both your physical and mental health, so it’s worth thinking about how you can bring it into your life if it isn’t there already.

Simple self care is more likely to be sustainable over the longer term. Sometimes we can make our self care routines too complicated, and we may become demotivated and give up. I go through 5 simple self care tips and self care ideas that you can put into practice to help improve your mental wellbeing.

2. Drink more water

I think we’re made up of something like 60% water, so it stands to reason that drinking more water is good for our bodies.

If you’re exercising regularly then it’s definitely important to ensure you’re drinking enough water to replenish what you lose through exercise.

Some people find water to be pretty bland. If so, why not invest in a water bottle like this one where the fruit infuses the water. It might help increase the water’s appeal!

3. Declutter your home

I don’t know about you,  but there are times when I feel an intense need to clear the clutter from my environment. I do think that clutter can have a psychological impact.

Don’t feel that you need to do the whole house in one go – do one room at a time. This might include sorting through old clothes, books, and gadgets that you no longer use.

You’ll feel the benefit of creating more space in your home, and if you’re able to donate the items to charity you will have made a difference to the lives of others, too.

4. Reduce your screen time

When I evaluated how much time I spend on social media in the evenings, I was shocked that so much time could pass and I didn’t even know it.

I’d been complaining that I didn’t have time to do the other things I enjoy doing, when in fact I had a few hours which were otherwise being wasted on the internet.

Reducing your screen time will likely mean you have more time for other things you want to do. Plus, it’s best to stop using screens an hour or so before bed as this can affect your sleep.

5. Nuture relationships that bring positivity to your life

If you have people in your life who bring you joy, then make sure you work on nurturing those relationships. With everything that’s happened over the last couple of years it’s been hard to maintain some of our connections.

However, with the increase in the use of technologies like Zoom and Facetime, perhaps this might be a way of keeping connected with the people who are important to you, especially if they are far away geographically.

Equally, if you have people in your life who no longer bring you joy, it might be time to review those relationships and perhaps reduce contact or stop it altogether.

I hope you’ve found these self-care tips helpful. Are there any tips you have that I haven’t mentioned here? Let me know in the comments!
